V9990 is not part of MSX

I’d like a real V9990 with superimpose honestly… It was planned for the KrakenGraph Full version, but I haven’t heard any recent updates on it.

Anyone know what happened to the kraken graph? Still want one or two of those

So, to me, if we speak about MSX3, the most logical thing is MSXturboR with V9990 and OPL4. Ideally, to make this combination more like what would/may have been the V9978, the V9958 of the turboR should be superimposed on the V9990.

I feel the same way. MSX 3 = Turbo-R + OPL4 + V9990 superimposed with V9958.

It's something that seems to come close for what little we know, and it is what all users must have felt but, in fact, the v9990 is a derivative of V9978 and without MSX modes. Nothing says the V9990 before all the functions of the V9978. For example, the V9990 has a specific function to display Kanjis and being able to add a ROM instead of the VRAM is not planned in the MSX hardware. Nintendo was doing this.

Has anyone ever asked Mr. Nishi for technical info? I don't think he would be ready to share them but we'll never really know without asking directly in private. Without these information, we won't be able to do better than OpenMSX, but that's good enough for most things. Anyway it will certainly be possible.

I think it's hard to get an image of quality for a reasonable price with superimpose.

The superimpose part is not implemented, other than that, the config is in the boosted turboR.

I wonder, is it too hard to add the superimpose in a future version of openMSX? It would allow the creation of some cool projects involving classic games. Smile

Previously I have experimentally implemented an emulator that superimposes two V9958s, but most people were not very interested.

Interesting. In the past there was a cartridge combining 2 V9958 made by a Japanese group, not sure if it was called Goblin.

That's right, it inherits the concept of GOBLIN, but the detailed specs of GOBLIN have been lost, so my implementation is not compatible with that.
I hope someone will create software that takes advantage of this feature.

I think the OpenMSX devs will only do this when a real V9990 extension does.

We have the video9000 extension which does it...

When you are using video9000 which VDP stays in front? V9990? Is it possible to define which VDP will be in front ?

The V9990 is in front of V9958.

Or in front of whatever you input into it, really (on the real hardware at least). This order can’t be swapped since the Video9000 interfaces with the V9990 to enable the superimposing, not the V9958. The thing that superimposes is implicitly in front.

The issue with Video9000 for us real MSX users is, they were originally sold in very limited numbers and are impossible to find. Therefore I’m crossing my fingers for a modern V9990 cartridge with integrated superimpose (and Video9000-compatible I/O).

If you want to superimpose the V9990 behind the V9938, just use a Philips NMS8280, Sanyo MPC-27, Sony HB-F900, Sony HB-G900, Victor HC-90, Victor HC-95, National FS-5500, Daewoo CPC-400S, etc.
