Hi!
I'm new to the MSX system but is really enjoying it. I have an issue, that I can't figure out.

I have the Philips VG8020 and the DS-512 from 8Bits4ever. It works great as long as the game roms are 48kb or less, but all bigger roms that I have tried just freezes up the machine. Am I doing something wrong or is larger roms just not supported in my hardware setup?

Thank you.

Jay

No. I'm not aware of any cartridge's ROM size limit for Philips VG8020.

DS-512 doesn't have megaflashrom with multi-mapper support. So either you buy a cartridge for that or use a loader like MEGA16 or Sofarom that can run several Megaroms.

Thanks for the reply. I am using Sofarom which works just fine as long as the rom-files are under 48k. Maybe it's because I'm not aware what settings to tweak when loading via Sofarun? (when the little menu pops up and you can choos between "Start" and "Settings")

Sincerely
Jens

What games have you tried that aren't working?

That was my problem also until I figured out how things work. On a msx1 you will not get this cartridge to work with larger roms as it requires another memory mapper as stated in the wiki:
512kB that can be switched between MegaRAM mode and memory mapper with a switch on top of the cartridge to be able to easily load MegaROM games with software like ExecROM or SofaRun if your MSX has another memory mapper
You need some other device like GR8NET

But why would it need another memory mapper?? That doesn't make sense to me.

No, that's not true. It's true that a chunk of the memory will be eaten by Nextor, and that for MegaRAM you will need an additional mapper (as the internal 64kb aren't enough for Nextor), but you'll still able to run games off Mapper RAM.

Sofarom should launch several Konami Megaroms using the Memory Mapper. There is some slowdown in some games due to converting 8K to 16K mapper.

No, the device like MegaFlashRomSCC+SD, Carnivore2, GR8NET are several devices in one but JayViking can purchase separate devices and use them in the other slot.

Some links to avoid getting confused:

There are MegaFashRom without Flash card interface but it's harder to find with multi-mapper and SCC sound support.

I was saying from experience that on VG-8020 device like SD-512 can only be used in mapper mode which will boot Nextor and one can use Sofarun. However this will be able to load only smaller games.
In megaram mode computer will only boot to basic.
What Jay wants will be possible with complex devices you listed.

Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge on this.
Good to know that I am at least not doing something thing wrong.
I will look into getting a separate memory mapper.

Best regards,
Jay
