SCSI became a standard in 1986, and this thing is from 1985. I think it is SASI based and the controller is inside the CD-ROM player.

Yes. There are some missing pins fron SCSI interface, so it is not a complete SCSI interface. Maybe late-SASI or an early-SCSI.
Some chips are from year 86, so, it could be both, IMHO.
In this case, all the communication protocols are controlled by the driver program in the MSX itself. It could be interesting to investigate it and, maybe, try CD unit in a standard SCSI or SASI interface in different machine... and try different CD unit on MSX

Just an idea: Could the CD-ROM reader be connected to a Mega-SCSI interface ?
