oh, so "CPLD" contains much more things than I thought.

I guess the reason for why expanding a 4 slot MSX is expensive is because of a catch 22.
If the 4 slot board were common, there would be more expansions available to complete it.

And some parts could be double use. Like the MSX2 VDP cartridge.
If it were prepared to also work alone in slot 0 and get dip switched to port 98.

About the real thing, I got no OCM experience but the postings about it feel like having emulator troubles.
Maybe one can get a real z80 in fpga, but the 9958 is not explored in that detail.

Well, I don’t know, but this is what I understand from the (Portuguese) site and posts.

I doubt it.

Besides, please appreciate the beauty of a system like this in stead of dreaming about this! :) As I said, what you are thinking about already exists, it is the EMSX by Padial (it is the second picture). You can buy it if you’re interested in it.

But why? The V9958 is 99% backwards compatible, and the best VDP.

That’s what I meant with “like a One Chip MSX, but with real MSX2+ components where it matters.” This has real components, V9958, PSG, the CPLD is just for MSX-ENGINE logic.

I did not at all think of the IBM PC way.
First, there is a nice MSX case with 2 side slots and 2 game slots.
And then an expander again is a nice box.
The expander is next to the machine and not doing stunts in a game slot.

Thinking consequent further, there must be an expander box that is of the side slot type Smile
These ideas may not be practical in a tiny market.
But they could be done with style, whole different way as the IBM PC thing.
The MSX slot is external plugging by the user, that makes it the special thing.

I don’t know if you noticed the link to this directory before (I hadn’t!).

Some nice pics there, and source files that are probably very interesting for those who know more about CPLD / FPGA technology than I do :).

Also, a previous project that I hadn’t seen yet. And more projects. Nice! I can see how the combination of all these would lead up to a complete stand-alone system :).

In the video left of the left slot another board is connected.
I wonder, is that part of the machine or was it an expander.

I think it’s this: Kit2+.

MSX2+ upgrade kit for Gradiente if I understand correctly. Contains the ROMs, RAM and VDP. Pic, more pics.

Wow, I really hope we can buy it in an end-user form. There are many of these projects, but none of them (except the Altera DE1 board) are available to buy, which in my opinion make them pointless.

I think this is the key. If the machine is not availlable this is more a hobby than a real project. The Altera DE1 board, with their strengths and weaknesses, is the only moderm MSX that anyone can buy.

I am actually ordering Altera DE1 board now. I am hoping they will reply to me soon. This to me is the cheapest alternative for an MSX 2 in a heart beat and of course it have 10 red LEDs (grin) and 8 green LEDs (super grin). How can I say no to these many LEDs heheheh Cool
