If you use HD floppies, you must cover the right hole with tape from both sides. This way you will tell your drive to switch to 720kb mode.

Yep I'm aware of this and covered all holes on all floppies

Alright, here is my new report of things I tried today- I have a batch of "new" TDK disks I tried to format and write to yesterday. As far as I can tell over 80% are piece of BS and when I tried to format them on MSX, 50% of them passed the formatting. Once I tried to fully format them on PC just to make sure, I realized they threw up another BS error on 2%, something like "CRC error"

After that I updated my Carnivore2 to firmware/software 2.40 (I downgraded the IDE driver to alpha version as I experienced CF card issues however), took some old floppy disk and formatted it on my PC and after that formatted on MSX2 again. After that I just tried one more time to write a game .dsk file into it using copy720. After that..... guess what.....

IT WORKED (! ! !)
and the disk itself
BOOTS UP (! ! !)
!!!

! ! !

Not sure what the real issue was, maybe it was that batch of floppy disks from hell. I can't even check it again as I smashed those faulty disks against the wall as I lost my crap completely, however I don't feel bad about them this time because at least I will not mix those faulty disks with good ones

So, is the issue solved or did I just get extreme luck just this one time?? This is by far one of my biggest achievements on MSX, I'm not kidding

Looks like I had the worst luck ever with floppy disks themselves. Even on Carnivore2 2.30, the disks format and write with copy360/copy720 just fine. HOWEVER I cannot write any file on disk by the integrated option "Write to disk: B:" in Sofarun. It always starts the disk activity but after that it always throws up this error:

*** Not a floppy disk drive

*** Error 'User error 1' when launching A:¥SOFARUN¥SC.COM DISK1.DSK B:

I would so, so appreciate it if the integrated option worked better than... not working at all. Maybe integrate copy360 and copy720 respectively??

I was digging a little deeper into the issue and it looks like Carnivore2 software 2.30 caused me those troubles and probably didn't want to load up files, making it throw up errors after 2 stages of writing or whatever. Some diskettes actually got damaged alongside as they threw up some CRC errors on PC but some diskettes were actually still fine. After checking things up on Carnivore2 software 2.40, it was finally formatting and writing images on all floppy disks without issues. That is it wrote images to floppies via copy360/copy720 programs, the integrated option in Sofarun doesn't work at all as mentioned before. If anyone starts having the same issue then this is the possible solution for this. Also if the integrated option to write disks in Sofarun gets fixed then this is absolutely all that is needed here. At least it doesn't work on my Japanese MSX2 Sony HB-F1XDmk2

Did it ever occur to you that it could have been the Nextor version in Carnivore and not the firmware affecting the floppy disk writing? You were using Nextor Beta2 with 2.30 firmware before, but then you downgraded it to Alpha2 because you had issues with your CF card and firmware 2.40 + Nextor Beta2 combination.

You can verify this by flashing your cartridge with 2.30 firmware and writing Beta2 Nextor there. If you can reproduce the problems, you can then try to downgrade Nextor to Alpha2. If the problems are gone, then it's Nextor's fault and the ticket should be created for Konamiman to fix this issue.

To be fair I don't even know which files are which, it all got mixed up between revisions, github updates, downloading things at certain dates etc. etc. etc. All files on my CF card are completely the same however. I just kept reflashing Carnivore2 to see the results. What I kept changing is this:

2.30:
Altera firmware
Bootmenu
IDE BIOS
FMPAC BIOS (probably not affecting this)

2.40:
Altera firmware
Bootmenu
IDE BIOS (switched to another version due to the CF card not working at all)
FMPAC BIOS (again, probably doesn't affect this)

This means at least one of these things is probably at fault. MAYBE it is the IDE BIOS, kinda makes sense or at least some configuration of these files is incompatible. I can check certain files and compare them by binary in total commander as I lost track which is which anyway

Well the same thing seems to happen with other Nextor based devices on my machine. I formatted a floppy (on FS-A1ST which does verification afterwards). I try to write to the disk with fdload under Nextor I get an error And afterwards the disk won’t format properly...
