Here's a dump of the ROM, I hope I've done it right.

Yes, the dump looks good. Thank you!
This seems to be more like copy of SVI-738 disk controller although I think side select is a bit different. This seems to be normal, not mirrored 16kB disk ROM. Control registers them self are mirrored meaning that A3, A4, A5, A14 and A15 signals are ignored. BIOS it self uses controller from #7FB8-#7FBF.

Format options are:
1 - 1 side
2 - 2 sides
3 - 1 side, double track
4 - 2 sides, double track

Quite interestingly it seems to write the original format option information inside OEM name on the disk boot sector.

Originally, was the interface sold alone or the drive?

I never saw the interface for sale anywhere in the UK, i have been on the MSX scene since around 84-88, and then got back into it around 95 after finishing college

I know Karl, good friend of mine. Smile

The drive that came with this interface looks like a home made job, NEC drive squashed into an aluminium case with an atari PSU.

That is what I thought viewing it online, home assembled job. The last I saw Karl he gave me a "bear hug" at one of the RCM events, mention to him about David the MSX freak he will know me, I worked with him at British Gas for a while. If it is a full height drive, you might be able to get two half height 720k drives in there, you would a twisted cable father than the straight one you have, might be a little pointless? It looks like you have a microSD device on the machine? I don't recognise it though?
