Hi Manuel, what roms do you use in OpenMSX? I downloaded the cx5m roms from Dvik's site but the machine does not appear after scanning in openmsx. I downloaded files:

Am I missing anything? I put the roms in /usr/share/openmsx/systemroms.

Try starting up the machine anyway (in Catapult you can say "Display broken configurations" in the View menu) and openMSX will tell you what is wrong with it.

It's possible you have a wrong SFG ROM, the one on that site seems to have register values not set to 0xFF in the ROM. The one that openMSX uses is an EPROM dump, if I remember correctly.

Anyway, check http://www.msxarchive.nl/pub/msx/emulator/openMSX/ for an interesting zip file.

The Yamaha CX5MII has a small built-in ROM in slot 3-0 which the service manual calls “subrom”. However as it is an MSX1, it doesn’t have what we usually refer to as a subrom, so it seemed like it had some other purpose. I suspected this ROM was there to add 80 columns mode support for its V9938, and looking at the ROM with a debugger it turns out that guess was right.

It sets up several hooks so that the WIDTH 80 Basic command works, and it also adds three CALL commands: CLS, @REL and @VER. CALL CLS clears the screen because CLS only clears half and apparently wasn’t hookable. CALL @REL prints "X.B8P.10.005", and CALL @VER prints "Ver 1.0".

A nice thought is, you should be able to put this ROM on a cartridge and use it to add 80 columns support to Basic on any MSX1 computer with a V9938 built-in, for example it would be useful for the Yamaha YIS503IIR and the Al-Alamiah AX200 which lack 80 column support.

By the way, the 80 columns mode unfortunately does not work in DOS.

Anyone has an idea how to contact grit? It seems the server for cx5m.net is misconfigured.
For the meantime, a mirror is available here; https://cx5m.file-hunter.com/
