What exactly are you doing, with connections and all?

I've got a 3.5mm cable from my laptop to my msx hx-10 cassette player ear socket

The cassette player ear socket is not for recording. You need a socket for input to the cassette, look for a "Rec" / "Mic" or "Line in" socket.

Do you want to load a game to the MSX from your laptop? That is what your setup is for...

Connect one of the output of your PC (left or right) to the input of the tape recorder (marked MIC or LINE IN or with a RED color).

Make sure the 3.5mm jack is MONO. I use this cable.

You need a 3.5mm to 3.5mm mono cable. One in the headphone socket of your laptop and one in the Mic socket of the tape recorder.

You can play it on a real MSX without recording it to a cassette. Your laptop can function as a cassette player. And I think you connected that properly.
