It seems to me that is running too fast. maybe a r800? or maybe driving the midi is more light than a FM-PAC?

I somehow don't believe the MIDI PAC makes the music lighter. The same musical code is being output.

And it's all being timed by the same VDP interrupt anyway - which is the only bit that can differ: 50 or 60 Hz.

I'm not so sure. i've tryed to profile the game. Initially i was convinced that the vdp was the bottleneck. Later i've discovered that this game is extremely cpu intensive. Running on a 7mhz or more z80 achiveve more speed.
pratically the vdp is free for more than 50% of time.
so the bottleneck is the code. now i considered the sound, because i know that writing opll like chips requires delays.

the game running on a real machine used 60hz timing, and is far more slow than video

You only miss the ugly drums, but indeed, something's missing...

Hey, wolf_. I hate to hijack threads to go off-topic, but I have been trying to contact you (though your personal email) for a while now. I was wondering if you are still interested on helping me with my games. Please contact at eduardo [at] opcodegames [dot] com.
Thanks!!!
