Freeware doesn't mean they can do whatever they want.
The license of a freeware game may require attribution; and they have proven unable to comply with something as simple as that. Hey, disrespectful punks: at least include the original readme file, for Zilog's sake!

Revo is a hopeless cause.
I had some words with Taylor Stokes in the past and expected him to change (spoiler: he didn't).
I even got some condescending message from other forum members, like "you should be happy seeing your stuff ported to X" ¯\(°_o)/¯
Well... KTHXBYE

You are right but the MSX scene has been converting games from SG1000 to MSX and nobody asked to the original authors and really nobody cares so we can't reproach them it.

But, like I said before, selling those games is regrettable and a theft and above all the lack of proper attribution.

oh wait, he has already put everything online and downloadable; which makes it a lot less worse to me

I'm not sure he really did that ... The link to the zip file is not working.

I just downloaded the whole zip from the link that is in the description of his youtube video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lv-CpKpyv7I

If the authors are active and they are easily reachable (mail, twitter, forums, etc.), I find any kind of hack/translation/patch/conversion reggretable if done without permission and/or without respecting the software license, whatever direction it is.

If we are talking about 30-years-old games... well, I think is a different situation (contacting the authors is a near impossible task).

I agree, there is a big difference in porting old games from the past ages, where the owner of the rights is lost in the mists of time, and to hack modern home brews whose coder are here alive and kicking. This is the kind of disrespect that could lead people to quit coding free games at all.

I'd say "quit coding free games at all.". We are living sad times.

I think I have a more relaxed point of view about this.

Maybe the conversions will attract users to the MSX community and the outcome is more positive than negative.

As a developer, as this is just a hobby, if somebody "copies" my work I take it as a compliment more than as an offense.

Looks to me like you are making a storm in a teacup.

I received a message in my Twitter that the MSX2SMS archive was updated to v1.2, downloaded it and added it to my downloadsite. 5 minutes later I wemt on msx.org and saw this thread and removed v1.2. I also noticed some older msxdev games in v1.1 as well, so also removed that archive.

I think it’s one thing to be upset about it, but the world does not revolve around those guys.

Heh, I'm not event upset. I have lived this many times already. It repeats again and again. I keep doing the stuff I want when I want (and when I can). Sure, I won't have any hurry to make anything cause this is not very motivating, so no stress either, more time to relax, but won't stop me either. No that anyway is going to care about what I do and I don't anyway, so no problem in any case.

But I know how the "first-timers" will feel about this. Those who face this for first time... As any other in past time, some will feel like leaving and some will see what you say. It's what happens every time. Time will say.
