With Metal Gear Solid V being released, I thought it'd be fun to play every Metal Gear in order. I have an MSX (a modified F700D) still hooked up to a CRT TV, but I don't own the Metal Gear cartridges. No worries, I have the HD versions of Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3, which came with both MSX version (and the first official translation of Metal Gear 2, I think?).

How did they make those two versions, though? All in game text is rendered in a higher resolution font, and there's more text as well. The menu is different too, as it has to provide saving to the PlayStation 3 instead of tape/disk (don't remember).

Do you think they actually had to alter the original assembly code to provide for some sort of hooks for the emulator? Like 'pause emulation and start dialog text' or something like that?

PS: My old school Metal Gear skills are rusty: Deer rank. Sad

AFAIK, those games where reprogrammed. They do not use the original MSX code.

Wow, really? Awesome that they put in that much effort to show the origin of the series. :-)

They were first released in that form on mobile phones in Japan. They were ported to PS2 as part of MGS3 Subsistence after that, which in itself was ported to the 360 and PS3 in HD.

Reprogrammed makes sense to me... the sound effects are sometimes different, and the music seems to be recorded, especially since the SCC music in Metal Gear 2 sounds absolutely spot-on.

Also, the framerate/movement in both games is lower/choppier than the originals (probably a side-effect from the mobile phone treatment), but on the other hand there is no slowdown at all.
