The layouts on the keyboard editor are basically for informative purposes - they don't actually change mapping. Selecting "European" shows you what the mappings would be on a European machine.

Best way to explain this behavior is to ask you to toggle between Russian and European layouts - note that when you toggle, Q (Mac) switches between Q (MSX, European) and J (MSX, Russian). This is because internally, the virtual code for both is the same - the function changes if you're running, say Philips NMS-8255 (European, Q) and Yamaha YIS-805IIR (Russian, J). This may seem counterintuitive (it does to me, and I put it together), but I couldn't figure out how to better handle it.

Since blueMSX's machine configuration files don't track which layout a particular machine uses (please correct me if I'm wrong), this was the best way I could figure to handle it. At some point, I will select layout automatically based on the machine selected on the General tab.

You can also find infos about the MSX keyboards in the online version of the blueMSX manual (however, infos about Danish and Polish keyboards are missing) :

I used the manual to set up the different mappings in the app - it came in very handy. Is the list of machines for each layout more or less complete?

The lists will be more complete in version 2.9 of the manual (as almost 100 machines have been added and some corrections have been made).

Btw uberjack, I would suggest adding a link to the FAQ item on the Machines preferences dialogue as well; not everyone reads the online documentation. Smile
Perhaps also copy the website's documentation as actual Help items in the app too.

Thanks for the suggestion. Indeed, there seems to be a lot of confusion over this particular issue. One of the features I want for the next release is automatic download and installation of machines. Hopefully, the blueMSX guys have no problem with me downloading from bluemsx's server?

I can run Windows in a VM, so I can definitely read chm files. Thanks for the offer!
