Had the chance and time to check it last night and I must say: cool stuff man, really like the feeling of it!

awesome to see there's still software being created for these old machines. You guys are triggering my nostalgic feelings and make me want to get an upgraded nms8250 like I had back in the days, but looking at the prices for those these days: I'm afraid I'll have to stick with openMSX and fMSX for now.

@Uninteresting: Would it be OK if I add your game to my site?

@tfh: That's file-hunter, right? I would think that's fine by me (and looking at the other titles on the site, probably the biggest honor I can expect it to get). I don't know when I'll get around to making the final few changes, as I'm too busy and frustrated with work at least for the rest of the year, though.

That's my site indeed Smile I've added games there that bring me back to my childhood and I have added a few recent ones that caught my attention in a positive way. And I already had quite some fun with your game, although I am not very good at it Smile
Anyway, I have added it and I will keep an eye on this thread and will update the game if needed.
Thanks!

I uploaded a new version of the game. Changes:
- thruster flames (will cause flickering, though; not sure if it's better this way or not).
- attempted to fix bounce directions in cases that weren't obvious, but I might've made it worse now.

Still broken:
- no timelimit for races (in case the racers get stuck)
- telling apart 60 and 50 Hz systems probably doesn't work reliably
- still no other tilesets or visual finetuning
- ship selection screen for multiplayer permits changing ship after pressing fire
- no alternative control schemes (allow fire = thruster as opposed to up/up-diagonals = thruster)
- sounds are lacking

Plus this is the first version I submitted to MSXdev. Fingers crossed it won't be disqualified...

I hope I'll have more time to work on this before the MSXdev deadline.

I like the game, but it is a bit hard to play due to the enormous bounciness when hitting the walls... can the collisions with the walls be a little less elastic?

Sure they could (just a matter of dividing the momentum by another 2 upon collision)... but the bounces are (IMHO) the main distinguishing point. Besides, I'd need to train the AI again (easy enough, just let the PC do it for a week or so) and redo all the track records (tedious and I really don't have the time and energy to do that again until the crunch period at work is over).

I hope the undesired bounces are more tolerable than the blue shell, though?

Sidenote: I just took out the thruster flames, as the sprite flickering routine broke things especially on emulated NTSC systems. But maybe the bounce directions are less broken now.

I made a quick edit that halves the bounces from regular walls. The green walls still preserve speed 100% and the ship-to-ship collisions weren't changed either. Track records are no longer valid and I didn't check how well the AI works, but the ROM is here. I doubt I'll carry on with this branch.

Plus I tried to fix the bounces near protruding corners again in the regular version.

Good to see you have entered the game for MSXDev '18! Smile
I've moved your game to that section on my site as well.
