Would it not be possible to store the current SymbOS settings and probably the VRAM before switching to Basic in order to be able to return to SymbOS without too many constraints?

I'm not switching SymbOS "off" at anytime, so I don't really "return" either, so in practice there should be no need to worry about settings getting lost... All the programs are running on the background regardless if you are in full screen mode or not.

Yes, it needs MSX2... but if you just want to have a peek, click ie. https://webmsx.org/symbos

Thanks for the link, very useful to give a try to SymbOS.

About drivers, I understand your point, it requires the original hard and motivation to do it. And about SymbOS I really thing it's a very very interesting project for 8bit, it's almost incredible how different machines shares a common OS. It has features from modern OS, specially multitasking features.

The only thing missing I think are the "Hello world"-type of simple applications that would get you familiar with SymbOS development... I'm planning to add possibility to use SymbOS low level routines also from BASIC, so maybe that will lower the bar a bit and allows to get familiar with the OS routines in practice. I know BASIC is far from optimal for this kind of stuff, but at least people tend to know it well.

I agree, we need more people from the community to help with SymbOS, it can be writing drivers or coding apps... I would like to try coding something, but I would need the classic Hello World tutorial to get started and an assembler to do it... when / if something like this is available, I already have a good idea of an app (actually a game) I would like to code. Probably the 'simplest' abstraction layer to develop is graphical API
The number of video chips is overall limited compared to other devices

I hear what you say... Now that I've learned my way around SymbOS (in hard way) I've stopped my BASIC development for a while and started developing "SymbOS ASM-developer package"... Please hold on... I have template and few examples ready, but it will take more tweaking to make it "super easy" to jump in... I want that you can transform routines made for MSX BIOS / MSX-DOS2 easily to SymbOS as well.
