Thanks so much! I had never actually thought of doing the condensed banding, I'll definitely give it a try! I can post the edited image on here Smile

Personally, I don't have anything against banding, anti-aliasing or heavy bayer dithering. These technics seem to have been bashed recently, but classic pixel art images always used them wisely, with great results.

Here are some examples:

Wow, these all look great! I had actually tried to avoid any dithering in my most recent piece, I'm definitely gonna do some of it next time Smile Are there any other MSX2 titles with great pixel art?

Definitely there are. Smile

The MSX has strong roots with Pixel art and what was called Japanese "CG". Be welcome explore the MSX section of the Retro Gallery for plenty more examples. The whole MSX Pixel Art Collection vol.1 was uploaded there.

Many don't know, but the MSX, Famicom, NEC PC-88 and NEC PC-98 were the source where Japanese Pixel art flourished, and that later influenced and spread to the western via NES, Sega Megadrive (aka Genesis) and SNES.

I didn’t mean to imply that banding is always a bad thing, and often unavoidable with only 16 colours out of a 512 colour palette as well. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t something to pay attention to and avoid if it makes sense to. There are techniques to make it blend in better. For me this was at least a good tip.

Maybe your interpretation of banding is also broader than mine, because not all of the images you linked really show banding in an intrusive way, e.g. in the Aleste 2, Metal Gear 2 and Gundam images I would say there’s no noticeable banding at all. The red car one on the other hand does show the type of banding that I think will look even nicer if it can be avoided.

I agree that it was a good tip, the link you provided earlier, with the shaded sphere, looked really nice with the condensed banding.

The car one did look nice, but I agree that the banding was a tad pronounced lol

To view images in legacy native formats, your best choice is to use RECOIL. It supports a plethora of native formats from a multitude of classic platforms.

Well, I like to use my own. Updated from PureBasic (linux) to Python, also can do some stuff with the gfx's. WIP.

I still use BMP2MSX to convert to MSX format, using Wine.
