I just remembered that during one of the many visits I made to MSX-GG-Groningen, we once had a demonstration of a 'secret' modified version of WBass2, avoiding several limitations of this assembler, increasing its usability even more. IIRC one of the members of Techno Crew showed this goodie.

I was thinking... maybe it's a good idea to trace this version. Maybe it's useful to current developers.

As he stated elsewhere in the forum, Ro has changed a lot in WB-Ass2 as well, their Fuzzy Kernel (Midas) is coded around it. You may be refering to that one.

Well, this could be the version Techno Crew used, but there might very well be ANOTHER modified version of WBass around...

Yeah, apparently a lot of them. Several groups started hacking WB-ASS2 and kept the improved program to themselves, so they would have 'an edge'. Ofcourse the 'edge' does not come from the compiler you use, it mainly comes from the quality of the programmer; those days were filled with rivalry.

I doubt the original programmer knows about any of them, because distributing a hacked version of someone elses program is forbidden by law.

I think many people were in fact using hacked versions without the 'original' hacker even knowing it. Things spread awfully fast in those days. I wonder how hackers managed to do all that in the pre-internet days Smile

(While doing a google search on wbass2 I found this old post again...)

Guyv. Where did ya get the idea of having an "edge".. Must have been YOU all this time eh.. (wie'm ruikt heeft'm gelaten zeg maar)

I've been in contact with Willem Berendsen and told him about our enhanced version some time ago. He liked at. In fact he was (years ago) busy with wbasm3 which had nice features (longer labels etC)

It's a pity he never released that version unless the sources he released are of that particular version.

If it was a member of the Techno Crew that showed you? Then it most certain the TC modified version.
I can send you that version if you want?
