A question about sprites in Hype

I noted that in the SAT each object appears twice, once with its color, once in black with a lower plane but in the SAME position.
All black versions are in lower planes wrt the colored planes.
All planes mirror at each frame (but colored sprites stay always before than black sprites).

Does anyone have studied why Hype uses teh black sprites (that shoudl be in theory invisible as covered by colored counterparts)?
Does anyone have a clear idea on how sprite multiplexing works in this game?

It cannot be just this.
The code duplicates in black in the sat all the sprites except bullets from the main ship.
Both colored and black sections of the sat seem to rotate independently
The black section of the sat rotates only within the "real" sprites on the screen even if no delimiter is used

watch in highest resolution:
when the enemies go over the credits, they got a black shadow. looks like the Y of black sprites is one down.

black sprites down in SAT, rotated separately, that means: 2 color sprites which dont flicker more than mono sprites, instead their blackness disappears.

it is a 2 color sprite engine, but one cannot see it Smile2

it is a pity he didnt just pick blue or something else instead of black, then this would be a multicolor sprite game. on the other hand the black makes the nicest shadow effect, the sprites got nice shadow design. these sprites would rock on a nonblack background like zanac.

I thought of letting spritesort set a per-sprite 5th flag.

The game engine then can go turning off less important parts of multicolor sprites for some frames. Or it can go flipping between them. A custom distribution of VDP DMA.

The nice thing is one can have many ideas, and they are separate from spritesort, so they do not pull additional cpu for every sprite.

Maybe it was the same situation what is going on here now... He knew that he can do multicolour sprite game, but fellow programmers would have blamed him as lame programmer as everyone COULD do it (but won´t do, because it is too easy and therefore everybody did single colour sprite games for MSX). But he WANTED to do it and so he made "invisible" shadows for spaceships, nobody could see what he has done and thus not blame him, but he can be proud of himself as HE DID IT!! Tongue

.....for more sensible reason, I guess that maybe he was forced to change other colour background to black as it was a space game and didn´t bothered to remove now unnecessary black sprites as being too pissed off? Or then he himself didn´t liked too light colours of MSX, as except black, there aren´t no DARK colours and then he cursed several times, changed background to black and left those damn good looking shadows there not wanting to remove them anymore and said game is finished and that´s it. Those were my guesses.

FYI MOAM for msx1 was using a 2 color sprite system with high priority main layers and low priority "detail" layers;
In case of 5th sprite the main layers were rotating according to the 5th sprite info held in S0 and the "detail" layers according to round robin.
