In the old times, of course Joystick!!!! Big smile

Nowadays it´s mostly the keyboard, but I voted for Joystick. Smile

For the nitpickers: mouse/light pen/light gun/trackball/steering wheel and mind control are not listed because most MSX games don't support those interfaces - and most MSX users don't master mind control Tongue

I voted keyboard, and would like to mention that I always enjoyed the cursors of the NMS8245. Great keyboard for gaming if you ask me Smile

Usually keyboard; I have always dramatically sucked at using a joypad.
Joystick is okay, too.

Love the Joypad. Those Panasonic ones (the large type).

I prefer joystick. But when I play RPG,I use keyboard. It's a bit bothering to press function key or return key when I use joystick.

Nowadays if I quickly play an MSX game on an emulator on PC, it depends... keyboard or joypad.

always was a keyboard player (8250 keyboard). In recent years, I've been using gamepads a lot more but for MSX I still prefer keyboard control. Since I mainly play MSX via emulation now, I've got a PC keyboard that's wired and doesn't lock on combinations like up+left+space.

Good call, that's what I need. Badly.

The Sharp Hotbit cursor keys were also great for gaming. Specially for people with big hands.

But the Panasonic's FS-A1WSX/WX/FX/ST/GT also have very good cursor keys. Much better than the PC ones.

BTW, the newest Apple keyboards may be great for typing, but those minuscule cursor keys just sucks for MSX gaming... Sad

I´ve learned to play with the VG8020 cursor keys and , now I have almost a dozen of different MSXs , I still love the touch of that keyboard . The NMS 8245 is near to this , and F700s and Panasonics are nice too . Instead , I found a little uncomfortable the Toshiba HX´s and the BIG BIG keys of Canon V20 , but still very playable and FAR BEYOND almost all PC keyboards on the market today ;-)

I preferred joystick, because my Philips VG8010
had this terrible layout for the cursor keys:

LF UP
DN RT

instead of a more natural

   UP or UP
LF DN RT LF RT
                  DN

User was supposed to put his hand on the keyboard
rotated at 45 degrees; I suspect the carpal tunnel
syndrome wasn't an issue in those days...

(an image of the vg8010 layout is here)

I voted for keyboard, though. Love the built-in cursor keys of each and every MSX.

I don't care all the bullshit you are saying about keyboards and joypads: nothing can beat a good old Telemach and nothing will ever. Hannibal
