As at last... we have smooth scrolling non-monochrome racing game for MSX, I suggest that creators of Lotus f3 could make MSX conversion of Commodore 64 classic "RALLY SPEEDWAY" for their next project!!

Graphically, main difference is that in Rally Speedway background is filled with barns, pools, rocks and bushes and there are just two cars (and 1 in one player game )

Rally Speedway is THE RACING GAME to look at and play and it have not aged at all during years!!

You can also choose road type: DRY, WET and ICY. And how fast your car goes and are you driving "In real life" or "in computer only" <--(practising without collision detection to background).

You can drive on the grass, as long as you don´t collide anything, and with careful driving on the grass, you can reach other part of road that way! Tongue And same is possible in two player mode, of course! Tongue

And there is very-simple-to-use-race-track-editor!!!!!!!!!!!!! Which allows you to choose and place EVERY rock and bush in the playfield (there are many types of rocks and bushes etc...) and of course you can place houses and water areas too wherever you want!

Here´s video:

that PENALTY means that slower player gets penalty time if other player reacher edge of the screen. :)

This game shows music IS NOT needed in very well made racing game which has good sound FX!!

After reading judges opinions, I found out I am not the only MSX´er who likes Rally Speedway! :)

So, how about converting Rally Speedway?

Well, this game concept is nearly identical to Micro Machines... And I've always wanted to have a Micro Machines clone for MSX Smile Multiplayer, of course! Also, MM doesn't use split screen, so it could be done entirely with the Lotus F3 engine, I think.

Maybe too many gfx details to be displayed using the limeted set of tiles of the scroll engine...
I like Lotus basically as is, I would only wish a better physics specially on crashes and leaving the road.

don´t get me wrong, lotus f3 is very good micro machines style game, and much easier to play than Amiga version of Micro Machines... (and that´s not a bad thingSmile) I just made a wish about converting one of the best racing games ever to MSX. Smile

I agree with MäSäXi. Rally Speedway is the best bird view rally game ever. The problem as jltursan says, that the scroll engine has very limited number of tiles. If it would be possible to port Rally Speedway to MSX I definitely would try to do it.

I was afraiding that... as there had to be a reason for making lotus f3 scenery so minimalistic....

But hopefully someday we can see Rally Speedway on MSX... I think it´s not too bad thing if every background object (houses etc...) have just one colour... hopefully someone invents solution for Rally Speedway in future... Wink

I'm also confident about further evolutions of the scroll engine; hey, after all is basically its first version!. Maybe with some code optimizing and carefully designed graphics something could be done... Smile

If I well understand the F3 scroll engine has very small margins to improve,
as it already squeezes the full bandwidth of the VDP.
In order to have more tiles on the screen the solution is somehow on the way

Who cares about the backgrounds? The whole point is that you have a nice variety in tracks (and track width) and most importantly: 2 players at the same time! I guess it would not be too hard to add that to Lotus F3, which was already discussed before. Basically, it's very similar to Micro Machines, just with a minimal background.

If things prove to be too hard, maybe an MSX2+ version could be made? Smile

IMHO, I'd rather play a game with blocky 8x8 scroll (but sprite should move smoothly), and loads of track graphics. Smile

And about that C-64 game, gameplay would run very fluidly if only the game did not restart at each five seconds. Its gameplay would suit me only if both opponents had very balanced skills. Tongue
