Tema: Challenges
Etiquetas: msxdev22, MSXdev

MRC user torihino is not a stranger to MSXdev. Last year he delivered no less than four new MSX games. This year might not be different as the third Robosoft game enters MSXdev22.

Registered as Robo Rumble, this is a game port of the original Robot Rumble. Not the first port from torihino. But, as before, he makes the game look good on the old MSX. Rumble away, robo, with MSXdev22 entry number #12

If you are enjoying MSXdev, please consider donating to the contest.

Very interesting and original gameplay.
However, the game is very difficult to play on an AZERTY keyboard because [A] and [Q] are reversed.
It would be nice to add keyboard detection: Just look at the 4 LSB bits at address 002Ch of the BIOS and if the value is '2', it's an AZERTY keyboard. There is also the German keyboard at value '4', but I don't know its particularity.
Otherwise you could use keys common to all keyboards like [E] and [D].

On one hand, I would like to see brand-new titles. On the other, now I don't have to feel jealous for the games available on other platforms Smile (I've seen videos of this on other platforms earlier, and I've been interested in it.) Either way, we win.

ToriHino, what are your guiderules when doing a port? As accurate as possible, even if it means not using the upsides of the target platform, or...?

In general I try to stay close to the original. Often that's a challenge, especially when for example the resolution is different, or the used colors (and number of colors at once). In this case I could make use of some sprites which the MSX has, making it a bit more fluent than the original on the Spectrum. So that means there are differences, but the general look and feel comes close (or at least I hope so Tongue ).

Oh and one small fun-fact: this game uses '3.1' sound channels. 3 PSG channels for the music, the robot moving sound is with the one bit sound also used for key-clicks.

I had to wait to play it in my computer, since the input is only keyboard.
I liked it so far, but I am not a fan of getting all the way back to the beginning when you lose a life.
The concept is very interesting and the graphics are colorful. Music is a bit too strident for my taste, but that is a very personal opinion.
Thanks for this port!

I like the game as well Smile Again a very pleasant release by Robosoft Smile
Maybe it's a idea to allow for defining the keys?

Good port. But I was really shocked when I heard music from my intro from early 90s in this game. I am curious how did it get there?

For Spectrum. It was under Code Busters and Prestige. This music was used in a few of them. Here are the links: https://zxaaa.net/intcb.html , https://zxaaa.net/intprestige.html

This particular one was pulled from Sergeant Seymour Robot Cop. Looks like there is a lot of pulled music from our intros demos & megademos on that website. I don't mind that people pulled it and post it there. I was just shocked to hear it after so many years (almost 30) and was wondering where it came from.

Most people now wouldn't even know where it came from. But I still prefer that games for MSXDEV would use original music.

While I'm no jury for this edition, at least I've been a dev-jury before. And using a musical cover is always a bit of a problem. They can be really good sounding tunes, but who do you give the actual credit? The MSXdev entry?

Well, I don't know the original game, but the first thing I thought is wow, that's some nice music there. So kudos for you! And indeed I feel no points can be assigned in a contested for something you didn't create.

While this is going a bit off-topic and I might be taking Rataplan's words too literally and maybe not the way they were intended... weren't many of the original Doom's sound effects from some sound effect collections? If I bought a permission to use royalty-free music from the composer and embedded that into my game, should that be ignored in the scoring?
