I know that Sir Clive Sinclair wasn't too nice to our excellent computers, I wonder how many Spectrums and ZX81's are still in use today? He had died today.

This is indeed sad news. My first computer was a ZX Spectrum 48K. He brought home computing to the masses with affordable computers.

One of the people who made computers accessible to a wide audience. Many people owe their careers to this man. There are many similarities between Msx and ZX Spectrum. My first computer was a ZX81 and it was pure magic for me to do this:

10 INPUT “What’s your name?”, A$
20 PRINT “HELLO “, A$

and see it on screen.

Rest in peace Sir Clive.

You might be able to do that on the Spectrum, although I haven't checked the manual, but it is not a valid line for a ZX81.
Correct would be
10 PRINT"WHAT IS YOUR NAME?"
20 INPUT A$
The question would appear at the top of the screen, and the cursor would flash at the bottom awaiting your input. The ZX81 was uppercase only as well, although following the Spectrum, Sinclair basic supported lower case.

You’re probably right. In my defence, it must have been 36 years ago.

Sad news. He made pocket calculators and home computing affordable.

I wouldn't have made Spectrum games without him.
