Maybe the FM-PAC degrades over time? Not sure if it is easy to open to check inside.

That was my original thought, which is why I ordered a new FM-PAK. I chalked it up to maybe age, but it's the same fault with my new FM-PAK.

Hi. For this explanation, it seems that this is a power problem.

The FM cartridge consumes more current than the equipment can presumably deliver through the connector. Out of capacitors? On the MSX and / or the FM cartridge? Bad power supply?

You should check these points to be sure what is going wrong.

Good luck

This sounds reasonable, both are old PSUs. I suppose I could go looking for a new MSX PSU with this kind of plug...

Can you measure the voltage on the cartridge slots?

I have a multimeter so I suppose I could, but I'm abysmal at EE so I don't really know what I'm doing. How would I go about doing that?

+12V is on pin 48
-12V is on pin 50
+5V is on both pin 41 and 43

Find some GND (a chassis screw or something) outside the slot to avoid having to put two probes in the connector. And be sure to do not touch two pins at the same time.
