Anyone ever thought of an FM upgrade to Ancient YS Vanished Omen??

If you're referring to Herzog, one should first talk to the Hassink :) (And o/c he'd be happy to help with other material/projects as well I reckon (joint efforts?) :))

I was primarily aiming at any Ys, but that could include Herzog as well. I'm not that picky Smile

A while ago there was a discussion about the possibility to implement FM tunes for Herzog, but people were suspecting it would slow the game down quite a bit.. (it's slow already..)

I think this is the VDP slows down the most the game when it waits the VDP commands finish, and if it is the case to add the FM sound should not change much.

The game was released for the Japanese Master System including a YM2413 / OPLL soundtrack which can be found here in VGM format. Would be really cool to play this game on MSX with FM, right?!

I imagine, the Master System being a Z80 machine as well, that much of this might not be that difficult even. Of course that is coming from someone with no coding skills on assembly / MSX...

AFAIK YS, Rastan, Out-Run, Fantasy Zone, R-Type, Golvellius and Ultima IV were also released with this feature for the Sega Mark III. I suppose that extract the FM data from those games and port it to the MSX ones is not possible...

Could you elaborate on why you think it is not possible? I’ve seen people deliver very cool and seemingly (to me) much more challenging enhancements (SCC upgrades for Vampire Killer and USAS, the FM upgrade for YS II, dual SCC for Salamander, etc.). Worst case one would have to recreate the songs from the VGM (which exist for YS, Rastan, Outrun) in a way that can be incorporated into existing MSX game code. Not necessarily easy but not impossible...

Also, R-Type MSX already has support for YM2413. (But it's not working very well with the original game IIRC.)

With regards to Ys 1 and Herzog; have full translations of both games lying around.

Was there already an SCC version of USAS? Have I forgotten about that?

@Manuel, yes R-type has FM support and IIRC it wasn't working well on the original. But I think BiFi made a patch for that.

The music of Outrun is very big. Something to keep in mind before starting.

Taking into account the hardware similarities between MSX and SMS, what I meant was to take the FM sound data from the Sega games and embed it to the MSX ones. Music is there, no need to arrange them again for the YM2413 chip but I assume is not an easy job. First a deep knowledge of both platforms is required among other possible barriers like compressed data or other hardware compatibilities.

Who knows maybe the companies even used the same hardware for composing both soundtracks, compositions are quite similar.

R-Type (MSX) vs R-Type (SMS)
Golvellius (MSX) vs Golvellius (SMS)
