Hey guys,

So while I wait for my MFR to arrive in the mail, I finally got a USB Floppy drive so I can now at least write a game to disk and finally get to test out the Panasonic FS-A1F I bought. If you could only play a disk game and had no controller, what game or games would you recommend? I tested out Aleste 2 tonight, but hard to play with just the keyboard lol. I have a nice Hudson Joycard Super II coming but it will be a while before that arrives too.

Snatcher would of been perfect with just the keyboard but I tested it and it's asking for 128kb of RAM to run it Sad that will have to wait for when the MFR +512kb arrives

It depends on what kind of games you like. There are too many good games to mention, even if we'd only consider disk games, so it would be much easier to recommend you something if we narrow it down a bit. Smile

well games I know I like on MSX are:

Metal Gear 1 & 2
Snatcher & SD Snatcher
Salamander, Nemesis 1-3, Space Manbow, Parodius, Aleste 1 & 2, King Kong 2 Basically Everything Konami lol but I really like all genres of games, RPGs, shooters, platformers

none of those games are very playable with just the keyboard though... I'm looking for something to play for like a week till my controller and MFR comes in the mail then I'll be deep into Snatcher & SD Snatcher Smile

Here’s some Japanese classics on disk for MSX2 to get started with:

RPGs: Ys, Ys 2, Ys 3, Dragon Slayer 6, Xak, Xak 2, Xak Tower of Gazzel, Final Fantasy
Action games: Fray, Psycho World, Fire Hawk: Thexder II, Valis II, Golvellius, Starship Rendezvous
Shmups: Aleste, Aleste 2, Aleste Gaiden, Hydefos, Laydock, Undeadline, Famicle Parodic
Puzzle: Puyo Puyo, Gorby’s Pipeline, Quinpl, Columns
Strategy: Herzog, Daiva V, Akanbe Dragon
Other: Rune Master II, Rune Master III, Nyancle Racing

For many of those an FM-PAC will be a well appreciated musical addition, by the way.

Here is a giant list

Try Dragonslayer VI for instance (look for the English translation by OASIS):
http://www.generation-msx.nl/software/falcom/dragon-slayer-v...
It's an RPG with turn-based battles, so it doesn't require fast control responses.
Apart from that, it has a brilliant story and a gorgeous soundtrack (don't know if you have an FM-PAC, but it sounds pretty good on PSG, too).

If it’s only for a week I would pass on the RPGs for now until you’re done with SD Snatcher (because it would be a shame to abandon an awesome RPG like DS6 halfway), and play some of the other genres.

@ Grauw: He can continue playing DS6 even after his controller arrives, though? Smile

LowRes: https://www.8bits4ever.net/ has them for sale at the moment. Eric Boez’s shop also sells them but it’s going to be down for a little while longer while he’s recovering.

JohnHassink: True, maybe in a week’s time you can just sample them a little bit to see which you would like to play first after SD Snatcher :).

By the way, there’s also a ton of good European MSX2 disk games, but I don’t know which run well at 60 Hz, some may force 50 Hz and others require 128K since that was the common amount of RAM in European systems.

Another appendix: I concur with Grauw's suggestions but would like to add "Feedback" to the shmups.
Also, are you playing Snatcher and SD Snatcher with or without an SCC chip?
