My 2 cents: to me, the game seems downright impossible to finish in single player mode. If someone ever beat it 20+ years ago, maybe you had a disks that had cheats without you knowing? You could try again from dumps of the original disks, to be sure.

I even made a little patch to release all weapons from the beginning just to see if the "more powerful weapons" would really help. And I noticed that:

- Yes, they help somewhat. Specially Tora as it's both fast and powerful. But still the weapon selection system is totally broken by design, and you must change from tora to another weapon that kills enemies on the ground, specially on the top view stages.
- The broken weapon selector deserves a rant on its own: it requires you too either take your attention away from the combat to the score bar to read the desired weapon name, or you will get stuck with mines on screen or some weapon that just doesn't fire anything. Either way, you'll loose a lot of energy midway. That's so frustrating!
- The last two bosses are nearly impossible to beat with any of the weapons available on single-player mode. The "blinking eyes" boss require too many shots from weapons that are way too slow to hit it before it close its eyes. And that phallic last big-boss sprays thousands of sperm-like things per second on you that are not killed by any weapon and are just impossible to dodge

Hi Snatcher Smile,

I managed to finish the game in single player mode some weeks after my first very angered post here, but that was such a painful and frustrating experience ! Everything is about memoryzing the stages and tactics, and the solutions are often very counter-intuitive... Your shumps skills do not matter so much in order to finish the game.

Your patch should indeed make things easier and enjoyable, but there's definitvely a design problem with this game, and that's too bad because technically it's one of the only MSX2+ shmup, with bi-directonnal smooth scrolling...

@Louthrax

Interesting! Indeed, "frustration" perfectly defines the feeling when playing this game. It should be "fun", but it's only "frustration".

But tell me: how on Earth did you manage to kill that very last boss?

@Wolverine_nl

I liked Laydock-1 too, and it's a very beautiful game for such an early release date. But I really loved Super Laydock. It's where they refined and polished the formula for a very fun game to play. The ships in this game are very powerful and you feel like you can kill every single enemy around you and save the universe. Smile

On Laydock-2, it's the very opposite. Your ship is so powerless and crippled that it can barely kill anything. You spend most of the time dodging the enemies that you couldn't kill and their bullets. They should open a new genre for this game: dodgem'up! LOL!

This brings a whole new dark meaning to the game subtitle "Last Attack". Because with such a crippled space fighter nobody would ever be able to come back for another attack! Running Naked in a Field of Flowers

Super Laydock is the best title of the trilogy, IMHO..

I'll make a little poll here, for those who managed to finish Laydock-2: Did you notice that a hidden feature was an absolute requisite to finish the game? If so, can you please name it?

If you didn't notice any hidden feature, please be sincere and also state it. Smile

I don't really remember. Smile
I did beat the game in 2P mode on a real MSX2+ (so no cheating) with Sama (as we did Super Laydock directly after that), somewhere in the '90s.
I've never managed to beat the game in single player mode without cheating.
