Please, don't delete it. It's a good opportunity for many people to discover another good music chip with some stereo effects !

Second that! Better expand this thread to the entire Yamaha OP?? family, and allow a bit of related chiptunes. A nice opportunity to compare what each chip can do, and strength/weaknesses of particular chips.

After all: aren't we always looking for YAMSC? (Yet Another MSX Sound Chip) LOL!

Btw: one way or the other, somehow I see this in MSX'es future...

I found a very nice description and comparison of the OPM, OPN and OPL families (third comment):

I just realised that the PC-88 uses OPN instead of OPL. If this disqualifies my suggestions for this thread, I apologize and could delete my post if desired.

Don't worry, no capital crime done. Smile

My intentions when opening this thread were (1) share good music that make most of these chips, (2) raise awareness of the different FM families and as a bonus (3) bring some light to this family of soundchips because - except for the OPLL - the they seem to have been forgotten by the MSX world recently. Specially the OPL3.

(By "OPL3", I also mean the FM part of the OPL4)

I found out that Diode Milliampere is selling his nice OPL3 chiptunes in this website. There are many sweet albums there.

My favorites were:

If you buy an album, I can also ask him to send the respective A2D files. :)

I stumbled on some very nice OPL3 songs made with Moondriver. The mp3 versions can be listen here, and the MML files can be found here.

I recently picked up Adlib Tracker II to make OPL2 music for the Alllegory demo for the Assembly 2016 Oldskool demo compo
http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=67900

Here's the Adlib Tracker II module: http://www.kameli.net/~yzi/ropl2048_a2m.zip
And an MP3 rendering: http://www.kameli.net/~yzi/ropl2048.mp3

The reason for limiting the tune to OPL2 features turned out to be somewhat arbitrary. :) Visy just wanted to have Adlib music, because there aren't that many PC/MS-DOS Adlib demos out there.

I was surprised at how nice Adlib Tracker II was to use. Or more like, astounded. WOW! I was mentally prepared for a painful experience producing horrible Adlib stuff, but once I got over some initial confusion, the tracker was super easy to use, and to my surprise, I was able to make nice sounds with even just OPL2 features. The trick was to start from scratch with the instruments, and not even look at the bundled example songs. The only trick I had to look for in the ready-made sounds was, how to make the noise for drum sounds - and it was to just use sine waves but with feedback cranked way up. Actually kind of a basic OPL thing, I guess.

I wonder how much work it would be to add OPL4 support for it...

I've been making some OPL+ OPLL music the past couple of years, and trying to make something else then the usual msx demo stuff. It might not be everyone's cup of tea though but I'm doing some fairly experimental stuff, trying to get the most out of the soundchips. Here's some stuff,if you haven't checked it out :
