EGG Music Records, a music label in the Project EGG family, has announced a CD album named MSX Racing Spirit Soundtracks.

The CD features the music to the racing games released by Konami on MSX. We all know these games as F1 Spirit - the way to Formula One and F1 Spirit 3D Special, but as F1 is a trademark that is difficult to use for commercial purposes the CD album was renamed.

The album contains 12 SCC tracks from F1 Spirit, 11 FM/PSG tracks from F1 Spirit 3D Special and, to top it off, 7 PSG-only versions of tracks from F1 Spirit 3D Special. Release is planned in May 2014 for 2.000¥ (about € 14,-).

Correct if I'm wrong, but if I buy this CD I'll listen to the exactly same music I would hear if I play, for instance, F1 Spirit in my MSX? I thought they would release new versions of those songs...

This PSG+SCC CD concept sounds a little bit weird. What's the point in such a CD? Maybe they have mixed the PSG/SCC volume balance in a super duper correct way? Then again, many Japanese things are weird. Like these DVDs where some guy plays old video games. Not only do you not have to get actual old hardware, you don't even have to find an emulator, or actually play the games, you just watch. How cool is that? Wink

Grauw: thanks for the link, totally awesome stuff.

@yzi - aren't us gaijin doing the very same with "let's play..."/longplay vids on YouTube?

Yeah I guess so. Big smile But would you buy that stuff on a DVD? Then again, if it wasn't for YouTube, maybe we would.

Trademark?
F1 is trademarked... I doubt F-1 is... The MSX logo seems to be trademarked though

SCC OST released by Konami are often, but not always, remastered in stereo. so it may or may not be exactly what you can hear on MSX.

I think anything related to racing can not use F1, F-1, Formula, et cetera without a license. Makes one wonder if the original release was licensed or that it was still fair game back then. Perhaps the game itself will be re-released as well?

Either way, the MSX logo is trademarked, but the ©2014 MSX Licensing Corporation on the product page indicates they've got that part covered Wink

Using "F-1" could've been a smart trick to get around the licensing... other than that, there seems to be some brand licensing going on, with Dunlop, Bose, etc.
