It's my most favorite time of the year (I possibly like it even more than my birthday).
Why celebrate eating herring now? Well, that's because they're at their best this time of year! This, because they're the youngest and first breed, the first edible ones from the season, who've just filled their little bellies on a lot of plankton and got nicely fat 'n' tasty! That's the entire focus of this event. :) And the profits of the first barrel traditionally go to a good cause, which changes every year.
I'll share some pictures which hopefully convey the atmosphere of this joyful event...
We decorate the ships (even the military ones, as you can see):
People dress up in traditional garb and/or eat the fresh, raw herring like it's supposed to be eaten:
Or dress up in orange - that's okay too.
Everyone is cheerful, hospitable and 'gezellig'. Rich or poor - you'll get the delicious fish practically handed to you. Just say "Dankjewel", take one and experience the freshness straight out of the sea.
Even prominent politicians (let alone TV presenters, soapstars and the likes) join the fun and awesomeness which is Vlaggetjesdag.

Who can blame them? There's live music, gezelligheid, free food and a sense of unity rarily seen nowadays.
Don't like herring? Well, you can get some awesome crab, lobster, shrimp, mussels, catfish, flatfish, wolffish, or anything out of the sea (or rivers) freshly caught, prepared and served for your convenience. Notice our geography - half of our country was practically built on the sea, so we're awesome at catching and preparing seafood. :D
Apart from that, you haven't tasted shrimp until you had the ones from the North Sea. If you doubt that, I will challenge you to a cook-off. ;)
...and for just once in the year (except when there's soccer or your kid graduates), we can think/feel/say it's nice to be Dutch without being called a nazi or a fascist.
I don't think any further explanation is needed why I hold this time of the year so dear. ;)
