I like the multilayer effect... are there games on the msx that have a multilayer effect too ?
Depends on whether you refer to MSX1 or MSX2 and higher...
A smooth and colourful multilayer scroll as shown above is totally impossible on MSX (any version, except perhaps using one of the more recent graphic cards).
I may be going 'outside of my book' now, but there's something coming up in the future which, with all due respect, will prove that statement wrong.
Oohhh, I can't wait
I could hardly imagine given the hard technical constraints, but please surprise me.
Well, what I (hopefully) can tell, is that it uses some clever screen 4 tile updating tricks.
At the moment it scrolls fast like hell (maybe even too fast) and it already got background animations, enemies, projectiles, huge sprites.
It's like a multidirectional Space Manbow / Fantasm Soldier II - scrolling platformer, but NO 'flapping' of borders on MSX2 and pixel-smooth.
I know I'm totally going out of my book now.
But I can't help it.
One of the developers is going on vacation now, but in a few months there will probably be more info.
Wanderers from Ys is also pretty multilayer, but it's MSX2 and a tad slow.
Indeed, so is Dios (both multilayer and a tad slow I mean), while Fantasm Soldier II is more likely to be considered double-layer. :)
...and ofcourse there is Firehawk - Thexder 2, which is -scrollwise- even more modest compared to aforementioned games since it merely has a static background behind a moving foreground.
Anyway, I thought only 1 / pixel-perfect scrolling stuff counted here. ;)

Allow me to disagree. Ball Quest features a smooth and colorful multilayer scroll.
Thexder2 had semi parallel scroll effects.
You could try to reproduce it on MSX2 using the hardware scroll and tile manipulation in screen 4, but you'll encounter a colour limitation for every 8*1 px area, meaning that the secondary (software) scroll will be less colourful.
Maybe you programmers could think of either misty or shadowy dark background. There are (non-msx) games which have totally black monochrome trees in the background behind closest multicolour trees.
Thought those games don´t have parallax scroll, but I just gave this as an idea.

Cool!!!
Demonseed, is this Bart's new project that was announced a few months ago that you're telling tales about?
