Dead Of The Brain - English & Spanish patches

Dead Of The Brain, one of the last commercial games for MSX by Japanese company Fairytale, got a well-deserved English & Spanish patches. This horror AVG for MSX2 inspired by George A. Romero's movie Day of the Dead from 1985, features very elaborated screen 7 graphics creating a dark and terrifying atmosphere full of zombies.

Manuel Pazos was in charge of the English patch. On the other hand, Theo Wilderbeek (adolchristin), who realized that the game translation was viable, was working in parallel with the Spanish patch. In addition, Manuel improved some aspects of the game, disassembled part of the code and developed some specific tools for this task.

Both IPS patches contain:

Texts based on the PC-98 English translation.
Some game bug fixes.
New bigger text area (3 lines x 32 characters) with a new font.

The non-Japanese MSX community will at last be able to enjoy this game.

Cool The patched version can be found you know where.
Too bad though it doesn't work on WebMSX. The screen update doesn't seem to go right: The old texts aren't removed completely so the new & old text get mixed.

I've started playing it, it's great to see that kind of thing!
I don't know if Manuel will read this, but at one point a character talks about being sentenced to "the electric chamber". I imagine you meant electric chair or gas chamber, and the two got spliced together.

Wow, great job! This game is pretty good! The graphics are actually 16-color and not just cheap 8-color PC'88 conversions. With the translation it is very very well playable. Thanks a lot, Guillian!

Good reason to boot that game again. I played it in the mid 90s just for the graphics. Now I can replay it for the textual contents as well. Good work mister

I must be doing something wrong. I've patched all three disks using BiFi's ips4msx and concatenated them using concat /b disk1.dsk+disk2.dsk+disk3.dsk patched.dsk but all I get is a dark red rectangle filling almost the entire screen. Same result if I do the patching using https://www.marcrobledo.com/RomPatcher.js and the concatenating on Linux using cat.

What am I missing here?

As you can see the news post is now on top again in front page. The reason is because it has been updated with the Spanish patch released today and we didn't expect that. In fact both patches were in development at the same time so better to merge them together.

If you want to play it with Sofarun/Runit you have to. It could be that the game just isn't compatible with both. That happens. Runit is not maintained anymore. Sofarun's Sofarunit is based on Runit. That might work. And if not, ask Louthrax to check it out.

@Apeman, i'm having the same issue but I used lunar IPS which worked with other games i've patched. I'm not sure how to use this IPS4MSX. I'm using open msx. Can someone just host the patched files?

They are hosted on my downloadsite, but MRC policies prohibit me from posting the link here.
But if you go to https://www.arnauddeklerk.com you should be able to find the needed information to download the ready-patched files.

When using openMSX you can IPS patch on the fly. In Catapult press Disk A in the Session tab.
