Nice that you like this machine!
A lot of answers

This is an MSX2 with a R800 or a Turbo R with a manual R800/Z80 switch? Can you take pictures?
This computer was sold cheap on Yahoo auction.

Yes, maybe we can get more of them over here in Europe very cheap Cool
I wonder if this one also has a V9958 or just a V9938 VDP. (probably no V9978, but who knows?)
Japan really loves MSX! Smile

It's a full TurboR: R800, S1990, T9769C, V9958, YM2413, etc.
You can switch between R800 and Z80 via software.

- does CALL KANJI work on this machine ?
- does FM soundchip work on this machine ? I suggest to test CALL MUSIC and to run a cartridge game like Aleste.
(Aleste FM will work even if the MSX-MUSIC BASIC is not present, as it seems to be the case in the NTT Captain ... the BASIC commands can be removed from the FM rom)

CALL KANJI and CALL MUSIC works fine. And CALL COMINI and CALL COMTERM. The usual BASIC extensions that you expect in a TurboR machine are all there. CALL PCMREC didn't give a syntax error (but all times that I try to use it the machine reboots)

@Piter When can we expect to see a ROM-dump? I'm dying to see what is different in this machine. Maybe we can see what modifications Panasonic made to "standard" MSX tR ROM etc. Maybe it was not required to switch CPU by software? ... or then the switch only sets up default mode where to boot if software does not change that. How ever we need to see the ROM in order to figure out what is going on.

The switch only affects the boot. Even with the switch in Z80 position you can change to R800 (and vice-versa)
I already have a ROM-dump. Only don't know where to put it. I can send it to your email if you want. I have pictures of the PCBs, too. Probably will upload it soon. Need to find them.

@madscient: We should go to their headquarters one day and ask if they still have old machines in storage. ;-)

If you find some information there, please share it here. I am really curious about that machine.
If you find some keyboards... I need one (or two), help the guy that find this good stuff Wink. Pioneer UC-V102 and Takaoka NIA-2001 uses the same Mitsubishi keyboard. So I can't have all working at same time Sad

Actually, this makes me wonder how many other relatively unknown machines are actually MSX.

*Yes* that's my big quest. Find those "hidden" MSX machines. Some are "MSX-based" hardware like many Sony Videotitlers, others are full MSX computers, like NIA-2001 and UC-V102. Actually I am finding some good stuff.

Piter Punk: I wonder how did you know it was an MSX compatible device? By accident? You bought it without knowing? or did the yahoo seller told you? Or did you know it beforehand and were you looking for it for a long time?

1) I didn't knew for sure
2) Not totally an accident
3) I bought it with a guess
4) Yahoo's seller probably didn't know what he was selling. So he couldn't tell me anything
5) I have some tips and clues. So, with them, I searched for this one.

I have a small list of equipaments that I guess are MSXs, and I try to buy those equipaments when I found some of them. I was wrong too many times and have a big pile of random electronic devices at my home.

Well, try and see if you can find this one:

It's a BED that comes with an MSX2 integrated! The article is from the June 1989 issue of MSX Magazine. I doubt there are any of these left. ;-)

And you can't imagine how much I envy you for that.

I'm the lucky owner of this Selector-6. You can insert up to 6 cartridges and select each of them from a menu (boot-ROM). There's also a switch.
It reminds me of those Super Famicom boxes with several games used for hotels in Japan (I also have one of those from Rklok).

@Piter:
Can you try CALL RAMDISK command on NIA-2001, without Mega Flash SD?
Does it have MSX-DOS2 kernel even though has no FDD?

No, I don't have one. But if I did, you couldn't buy it from me, no matter how much you offered.

Instead I'd give it for free to someone like @madscient or @SearEclair because they have the technical skills to dissect and study the machine and contribute the information back to the community.

Oh, please do. My mail address is in copy/paste form in my profile. (NYYRIKKI at that big google mail server) One good option is that you put them to Dropbox and share the link. (Good thing is that you don't have to install anything to your computer, if you don't like to. It can be also used as a simple www-server by dropping in the html files.)

I think you should share some more information about your hobby on a web-page or something. Even when you miss that is valuable information as then we know that you have investigated the issue already. Now I must say that your quest has been a huge success. You found a gold vein and I think this find will cover all the misses you've had. I want to remind that after all you ended up rewriting big part of the MSX tR history again.

I'm only slowly starting to believe that this is all a real deal and not just some heavily hacked up clone with some MSX tR parts inside. I must say I have pretty mixed feelings... Although I like MSX tR more than any other computer, I've had this hobby from a kid and I'm very exited about these new findings, I don't have the latest and best version of MSX tR anymore... Not even all MSX tR models anymore. What kind of tR enthusiast am I? These devices have been around for more than 20 years! (I'm having an mental break down moment right now...) I thought that I knew all of MSX tR, but now I feel empty... The very fundamentals of my life has been shaken. Maybe I should go to visit a therapist or something.
