as you all (should) know by now, there is an english version of illusion city. since i have never played nor seen this game in action, i downloaded it and started playing it with openmsx. now i must say, this is a very nice game to play, and i see things that are in pumpkin adventure too the battle scenes are stunning too and i especially like the many animations i see.

but, the music is just not so.. like xak and such. its ok but not what im used too when playing microcabin games. i also think the graphics are a little bit less great compared to what they've shown with xak.

for as far as i played, the story behind the game seems nice.

what do you think??

my conclusion is: power up your msx turbo r emulators (or the real thing) and play!

btw: i just killed the first tian octet member but now i must go to shu luan (iirc). can't get there by using the yellow public transport there, anyone here that knows what to do ??

Xak and such had a medieval setting, its kind of music doesn't suit the setting of Illusion City.
IMO the Microcabin style is still very much there, and I love the music a lot! Always used to listen to it on Micro Music TSR

I've had a turboR for many years now, but never played a single turboR game on it ^^; (Just Ranma 1/2)
This translation seems like the perfect opportunity

IC is a great game, trust me... It's somewhat difficult (more like lengthy) but anyone that want to finish it certainly can. It is really great, a must play. The music is not at all bad, but it just happens to be that the first two or three tunes you hear are pretty much the worst. The battle tune is not brilliant, nor are the city or 'ev' tunes. The rest is pretty good tho. IC has a boat-load of items by the way, this adds a lot to the gaming experience. Do not cheat tho, it's not necesary and really spoils the game a bit. If you want to play the game with a little more background story, try checking out Dennis Lardenoye's Illusion City story on the FutureDisks. It gives a great idea of the game in a very novelist fashion. I say this since the part that was translated (till disk 3) prolly won't last you too long. Have phun playing... I did...

hmm, wasnt there also a story in the last 3 MCCM's about IC. anyway, i really hate the psg noise when going with the public transport. annoying psg tone..

btw: im not into cheating the game. i did read about a cheat code where you had to push the cursors fast enough so the cursor-lights on the right of the screen dont go on. well, with openmsx its really not possible to kit the keys that fast. not sure if it influences the cheat code..

Technically speaking, the music of IC is brilliant and revolutionary. The real difference between IC and the Xak series is that the IC music is just generic background music, where the Xak music is real fantasy music. All the tunes in the Xak range are the same style, they're uniform. The IC tunes don't seem to share a lot of common style aspects. That's a choice one makes.. I didn't hear that many games that have a uniform style anyway.. (real filmmusic is much more uniform, with shared themes).

Actually, it doesn't have to be fast at all. Just take your time. The only reason I mentioned the lights was that it's the only way to see if your input has been accepted. The problem most people have is letting go of trg2/shift on time. I actually 'discovered' this cheatmode the first time around when we were looking into translating the game. This was when Dennis was writing his fab Illusion City story. Must've been around FD 14 or 15. I'll try and see if I can contact Dennis to see if he will release his text as PD. This way perhaps we can place it somewhere...

Could be my wrong, possibly... ^^;

But when I run Illusion City in my FS-A1ST MSX Turbo R (holy name ) it appears to run even slower than in my 7MHz MSX 2+... The R800 led is on, but it seems the game is running in Z-80 mode. Anyone?
